PHIL 100 Introduction to Philosophy (5) I&S Stephen Glaister
|
Description: Does God exist? What is the nature of reality? Can religious belief be rational? Is free will an illusion? Why should I be moral? We'll see how much of a philosopher I am. It looks like there's going to be a lot of writing in this class, but it shouldn't be too tough. Plus, it seems really interesting.
Grading: 70% of our grade is based on three short papers (one three page paper and two five page ones). 10% is on quiz section participation, and the last 20% is on the final
What I Say So Far: For the first half of this course we're studying epistemology (the theory of knowledge, i.e., how do we "know"; do we have any knowledge or reasonable belief?) and the last half is on metaphysics (is the material and mechanical world described by the natural sciences everything there is? Are humans just scientific objects?). As an intro class, we're being exposed to many different philosophical writings that some dead guys wrote a long time ago (e.g., Descartes, Pascal, etc.).
Final Words: I took this class hoping to discover some kind of enlightenment on the human condition or something of the sort. Philosophy and spirituality are two very seperate things, however. Don't confuse one with the other. I've found that philosophy is mostly a method of thinking and nothing else.

CSE 143 Computer Programming II (5) NW, QSR Dugan, B
|
Description: A continuation of CSE 142. More coding, more hours, and more studying. But programming is fun though, right?
Grading: Homework (30%), Two Midterms (15% each), Final (30%), and quizzes/other (10%).
What I Say So Far: My fun C++ programming class. The homework takes a while to do, but it really doesn't feel like work, so it doesn't bother me.
Final Words: I take it back, I take it all back!!! Don't make me create any more annoying little programs, please! ARGHHH, I spent so much time the last one--that damn traffic simulation! STUPID... LITTLE... CARS!!!! When it's a red light, don't go through the intersection!!!

ENGL 200 Reading Literature (5) VLPA Monika Kaup
|
Description: I was going to take an Econ class, but the lecture time overlapped with CSE, so I decided to find an interesting VLPA class. English sounded good, and a reading class sounded even better. The description reads partly as an "emphasis on literature as a source of pleasure and knowledge about human experience." This should be a good class... we only meet twice a week w/110 min classes, there are a couple films to watch, and this particular course examines North American multicultural writers and their ethnic works. I figure we'll read a few books, do some symbolic reasoning, write a few papers, and maybe have an exam or two. I might even like it.
Grading: Class Participation (20%), Midterm (10%), Position Sheets (10%), Final (20%), and two short papers (40%)
What I Say So Far: Never again will I take a two hour class in the afternoon during Spring. The class time is mostly spent on lectures and discussions, which drag on, and on, and on. (Must... struggle... to stay awake.) I don't mind the reading material; I'm rather enjoying it. It reminds me of how much I love reading, which I hardly ever do even though I should. I have found my weak point, however, when it comes to dissecting characters, connecting plot points, and digging up obscure symbolic representations buried deep within the pages. During the discussions I literally have nothing to say. My brain just doesn't work that way or something.
Final Words: While most of the readings were somewhat interesting, I wish I could have related with the multicultural authors more... but when it all comes down to my personal ethnicity, I'm only multiracial, not multicultural.

CLAS 101 Latin and Greek in Current Use (2) VLPA Ceaicovschi

Description: I wonder how hard a two credit class is? This looks like an easy class "designed to improve and increase English vocabulary through a study of the Latin and Greek elements in English." I had a slot to fill, and since it costs the same amount of money for 10 credits as it does for 18, I decided to just add this extra class. Even though we only meet twice a week (100 min total), this probably isn't a slack-off class... I bet it's still gonna require work and studying.
Grading: Three quizes (15% each), and one final (55%)
What I Say So Far: Yup, it's still gonna require studying. Lots of memorization of Latin stems, prefixes, suffixes, and all that crazy word stuff. Reminds me of being back in elementary school learning vocab.
Final Words: Took the final exam, then forgot everything.
